The Sam Sayre Legacy Scholarship was established to assist Smithville High School seniors who have been accepted and are planning to enroll at an accredited college. Sam Sayre, who devoted over 30 years to coaching at Smithville High School is known for his unwavering Christian faith and commitment to generosity. By awarding this scholarship, we ensure that his legacy continues to inspire future generations to lead lives of purpose, faith, and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
Qualifications:
The qualifications for this scholarship are outlined as follows:
- A current senior at Smithville High School in Smithville Ohio
- Minimum 3.0 GPA (standard 4.0 scale)
- Permanent Resident
- Pursuing a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university as a full-time student in the fall of 2025
Applicants will be evaluated according to the 6 standards:
- Good, Upstanding Character: Applicants must demonstrate strong moral principles and integrity in their personal, academic, and social life. They should consistently act in a way that is honest, ethical, and respectful toward others.
- Christian Faith: The scholarship is intended for individuals who follow the Christian faith and embody the values of love, compassion, and service taught by Jesus Christ. A commitment to living out one’s faith is essential.
- Leadership Qualities: The applicant should display leadership abilities, both in formal roles (e.g., as a club officer or team captain) and informally by influencing others positively. This includes the ability to inspire, guide, and help others achieve their potential.
- Exceptional Work Ethic: Strong dedication to excellence, responsibility, and perseverance is important. Applicants should be hard-working and demonstrate a commitment to fulfilling their duties, even in the face of challenges.
- Generosity and Selflessness: Applicants should be givers, showing kindness, support, and resources to others rather than focusing solely on personal gain. They should be committed to contributing to their communities and serving those in need.
- Dream to Leave a Legacy: The scholarship is for individuals who aspire to leave a positive legacy to future generations.
- Demonstration of Financial Need: Although not a major focus, students with academic need are encouraged to apply.

Selection:
Applicants are screened, interviewed, and selected by the Sayre Foundation Trustee Committee. Scholarship interviews will be conducted in early April.
